The Ministry of Municipality on Wednesday began a five-day sale at Al Mazrouah Yard in Umm Salal to promote a locally-grown fruit commonly known as kanar.

The Kanar Festival will go on until February 13, with sale taking place between 7am and 5pm each day.

A total of 18 local farms are offering varieties of Kanar fruits in large quantity at the festival at special prices, said a release.

Botanically known as Ziziphus jujube, kanar ranges in shape from round to pear-shaped. It may be as small as a cherry or as big as a plum. It has a thin, edible skin and whitish flesh. When ripe, the fruit turns dark red. After turning fully red, the fruit begins to wrinkle and soften, but it is still edible.

The Kanar Festival at Al Mazrouah Yard seeks to promote local products, support Qatari farms and draw crowds to the yard, said Ahmed Al Yafei, Head of the Guidance and Agricultural Services Department at the Agricultural Affairs Department.

Experts from Agricultural Affairs Department are available to explain about Kanar tree and how to care it.
