Counselor Jaber Al Marri from Qatar was re-elected as chairman for Arab Human Rights Committee (Charter Committee) for a second two-year term. It has also elected Counselor Abdulrahman bin Mar'ai Al Shabraqi, from Saudi Arabia, as deputy chairman.

This was announced during the 59th meeting of the Arab Human Rights Committee, which was held today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League, and attended by all members of the committee to elect a chairman and his deputy for a two-year term.

The Arab Human Rights Committee was established under the Arab Charter on Human Rights after it entered into force on March 16, 2008, with the aim of examining the reports of the States Parties regarding the measures taken to implement the rights and freedoms stipulated in the Charter. It has seven members in their personal capacity who are elected by secret ballot by the States Parties to the Charter and who should be experienced and highly qualified.

Counselor Jaber Al Marri was elected chairman of the committee for a first term on April 26, 2021 after he had held the position of deputy chairman of the committee from April 8, 2017 to April 7, 2019.

The Council of the Arab League at the summit level approved - under its Resolution No. 270 of May 23, 2004 in its 16th regular session - the issuance of the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
