Some of Doha’s popular landmarks have been lit up with Mexico’s national colours for the first time on Thursday as the country marked its National Day.
The landmarks included the façade of the Sheraton Hotel on the Corniche, the Torch Tower Doha in Aspire Zone and the Khalifa International Stadium where, within the vicinity, the Mexican community in Qatar led by Ambassador HE Graciela Gomez Garcia gathered for an official ceremony to commemorate the occasion.
The event also served as the kick-off of the Embassy of Mexico’s countdown to prepare for the much-awaited 2022 FIFA World Cup which is expected to be witnessed by tens of thousands of Mexicans.
Addressing the community, Ambassador Gomez Garcia thanked the Qatar government for the historic tribute to the thriving Mexican population in the country working across sectors, including in aviation, oil and gas, education, sports, fashion, media and in executive positions in Qatari companies.
The Ambassador also stressed that the display of Mexico’s national colours in some of Qatar’s iconic buildings is a gesture of friendship from Qatar that is received by Mexico as a precious gift and with gratitude and humility.
She highlighted the anticipation and excitement of Mexicans, along with the rest of the world, for the world’s biggest football tournament to be hosted for the first time in the Middle East.
