Qatar World Cup Stadium workers test positive for COVID-19

16 April 2020

Qatar has reported more than five coronavirus cases in workers at the three World Cup Stadiums. This is the first of confirmed instances among those involved in the 2022 tournament projects.

Qatar reported a total of 3,711 Covid-19 infections, with 406 recoveries and 7 deaths since 6th March, but did not previously reveal any positive tests from workers at the World Cup sites.

The organizers revealed that the Supreme Committee (SC) for Delivery and Legacy confirmed that two workers working for an SC contractor on the Al-Thumama Stadium project have tested positive for Covid-19.

Moreover, three workers, one on the Al-Rayyan Stadium project, and two on the Al-Bayt Stadium project have tested positive.

Qatar is constructing seven new stadiums for the tournament, one of which has officially opened, and one of the existing venues was refurbished ahead of 2022.

As per the health ministry guidance, all those affected would continue to be paid and will receive free healthcare, the SC said in its statement.

The timing of the competition, which is due for November and December 2022, however, remains unchanged by the coronavirus pandemic.

The building work for the stadiums and work on necessary infrastructure to host the global soccer spectacle has continued unaffected even through the global pandemic crisis, even when the non-essential retail has been halted, and parks, restaurants and Mosques have closed.
