According to a leading travel analytics organization, Hamad International Airport (HIA) is now the busiest airport in the Middle East.
The airport has secured this position by safeguarding its airport experience by adhering to Covid-19 policies and protocols, and by introduction of technological solutions.
The report shows HIA’s growth during the pandemic and the fact that the airport has been able to keep up with its ambitious long-term goals, continuing with expansion while also being at the forefront of airport health and safety innovations.
While the airports across the globe began to shutdown in March 2020, HIA adapted and innovated to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic, and implemented the latest technologies to ensure the health and safety of its staff and passengers. It included and adhered to latest safety measures on par with global standards.
HIA was the first airport in the Middle East region to be awarded the ISO 22301:2012 Business Continuity Management System Certification by British Standards Institution for its pre-existing business continuity plans, while proving the resilience of HIA operations in the face of disruptions such as the pandemic.
The airport has adapted to changing the traveller needs with the help of technological solutions such as Smart Screening Helmets which help with contactless temperature measurement, the autonomous disinfectant robots, the UVC disinfection tunnels to decontaminate inbound luggage at the arrivals, and the security screening technology that helps passengers pass through security checks without having to take out electronic devices or liquids from their bags.
HIA teams also developed an automated facial detection system using computer vision and artificial intelligence to ensure wearing of masks for all its staff.
The airport has deployed touchless capabilities at other major touchpoints too such as self-check-in and terminal elevators etc.
HIA was the first entity in the world in the year 2020 to achieve independent certification from BSI for its implementation of Covid-19 Aviation Health Safety Protocols. This was awarded to HIA for being the lead in implementing best practices to ensure staff and passenger safety and security.
This year, HIA received the re-verification by BSI for its successful adherence to safety and hygiene measures outlined by ICAO CART.
HIA is also the first in the region and Asia to receive the 5-Star Covid-19 Airport Safety Rating by SKYTRAX.
The audit took into account the effectiveness in implementation of Covid-19 policies at HIA towards offering clean, safe environment to passengers and staff. This acknowledgement is sufficient proof to HIA’s commitment to operational excellence and passenger well-being.
