New social distancing norms in Qatar permits 3 people in one car

27 May 2020

Three members of same family will be allowed to travel together in a private vehicle, as per the latest social distancing norms issued in Qatar.

As far as occupancy limit is concerned, the family cars are bunched together with taxis and limousines, and are allowed to carry three people maximum at a time, said Abdullah Dhaen al Kuwari, First Lieutenant of General Traffic Directorate.

But, no more than two people are allowed to travel at a time in self-driven personal vehicles.

Since 19th May, the Cabinet in Qatar has imposed strict travel restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country.

However, Ambulances, and vehicles of the armed forces, the Ministry of Public Health, the Police, and other security authorities are excluded from this restriction.

Buses and vans are allowed to carry passengers up to half of their seating capacities, as per an earlier decision by the Cabinet.

“We are keen to educate the public through the various awareness points set up by the General Traffic Department. We explain to road users the importance of wearing masks and gloves, and adherence to the precautionary measures currently applied to contain the spread of coronavirus. We advise all drivers and companions to abide by all procedures specified by the state, and not to leave the houses except for the most urgent necessity," Lieutenant Kuwari said.

Legal measures would be taken against the violators by relevant authorities, he said, adding that, road users should adhere to all decisions taken for the general benefit of the society, and for the safety of their families.
