27 January 2021

Qatar has received global distinction in safety, as it has been declared the second safest city in the world.

Numbeo’s Crime Index by City 2021 revealed that Doha is the second in the world in terms of safety and low crime rate, among the 431 cities that the report covered. Doha secured 87.96 in safety index, and its crime index was just 12.04.

Numbeo is the world’s largest database of user contributed data involving cities and countries worldwide, which provides current and timely information on world living conditions, including housing indicators, cost of living, traffic, healthcare, crime and pollution.

As per the classification rules of the report, cities have been ranked in reverse order. The city which occupies 431st place is the one with lowest crime rate and ranks first in safety.

Doha, having scored 12.04 points in the crime index, is the second lowest scorer of the points starting from zero to hundred points. This classifies Doha as the second safest city at 430 position out of the 431 cities covered in the report with a score of 87.96 points in safety index.

While Abu Dhabi, capital of UAE topped the list in the safe city list, the other safe cities include Taipei, Quebec, Zurich, Sharjah, Dubai, Eskisehir, Munich, and Trieste.

Meanwhile, Qatar has retained its position as the ‘Safest Country’ globally in the 2020 mid-year Crime Index by Numbeo released in July last year.

The Numbeo database has been publishing its annual reports since 2009 based on the measurement of the crime rate in the countries of the world. The crime index is measured based on the laws of those countries.

The fact that Doha is at the top in safe city list in the world, indicates that overall safety and security in Qatar is good, given, the constant efforts by the Interior Ministry towards achieving its vision of maximum security and stability in society and protecting people’s lives and property.
